Apple Heats Up Race to Holiday Shopping

Steve Jobs and Apple today unloaded their cannon. iPod Touch gets officially christened. Jobber the Hutt announces the new iPod 'Family' including the Nano, Classic, and Touch. The iTunes Wi-Fi Store gets let out of the bag. And then, to get the blood stirred into the water, the price of the iPhone plummets... Big news, big hype, big deal......

Does that $50 price drop for the 1st Generation Zune feel like getting cold fries in the drive-thru after the Apple fest this morning? Don't get discouraged. Are the new Apple products so good and tempting that you'll let it rain on the parade? iTouch is an iPhone sans the 'phone' with a mere 8 or 16GB of storage... Big whoop.

iTunes Wi-Fi store is the 'major' news, to me anyway. It will be available in the 22 countries that Apple operates in. The new devices do not impress me very much. If Microsoft can get the Wi-Fi kicked into gear and 'really' let Zune become the 'Social' that it should, could, and ought to be - there would be much to be happy about.

I love my Zune and I have faith in the product for more reasons than one. However, Microsoft can't afford to bungle anything from now until the imminent Zune 2.0 debut that is on the horizon. Getting beaten to the punch isn't quite so bad if you can swing for the fences, right? Or, is this Texas Hold 'Em and the River card is yet to be seen?

Regardless, the gloves are coming off and I am expecting some Microsoft activity any moment now, whether official or rumor. Any comments?
